Meet the Staff at Erlanger Behavioral Health

John P. Hendrick, MD, DFAPA

Medical Director-Adult Mood Disorder Unit

John P. Hendrick, MD, DFAPA, is a respected leader who brings considerable experience and a wealth of insights to his position as medical director of Erlanger Behavioral Health Hospital.

Dr. Hendrick came to Erlanger from Mountain Home Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he served for 14 years. He joined the VA as chief of inpatient psychiatric services at Mountain Home VAMC. In 2012, he was promoted to chief of psychiatric services.

He has also served as medical director of Pine Ridge Treatment Center in Cleveland, TN; attending psychiatrist at Parkridge Valley Hospital in Chattanooga, TN; and medical director of Lee County Medical Health Clinic in Sanford, NC.

Dr. Hendrick is also a clinical professor of psychiatry at Eastern Tennessee State University, where he is a two-time recipient of the Psychiatry Residency Teacher of the Year Award. He has also received an Irma J. Bland Award for Residency Teaching from the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Hendrick’s areas of expertise include mood and thought disorders, electroconvulsive therapy, and the psychiatric aspects of behavioral neurology.

Dr. Hendrick graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, where he also completed his psychiatry training. He is board-certified in general adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has served as president of the Chattanooga Psychiatric Association and the Tennessee Psychiatric Association, and he is the immediate past president of the Southern Psychiatric Association. He is also a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA).
